again & we went over to the YMCA to a basketball contest but there was an "entertainment" first & we decided to go up to Helen's gym & there we staid - talking to her & to Miss Reese and later assisting at basket ball. Ned as "home" and I as umpire & "thrower"! Ned told me, she had promised to marry - this year & I told her if it was June instead of November, I must know it soon, for I shouldn't go to Europe in that case. She promised to settle it within a week or two. There is nothing more to be said on the subject "Fate" & the Astrologer are "doing their worst" we stood & talked awhile & then I came home to "figger" & write. Jan. 17. Sunday A warmish rain - but windy - blue gray & steely yellow sky which dried it up now & then. I got up late & after dish washing spent most of the day cleaning out & re-arranging my bureau drawers. Had a delicious chicken dinner & nuts & sat long at table, Mary & Emma Mac came up for an hour or so and we had a nice chat. When if got dark I read at "The Book of Snobs" & delighted in "Lady Wilhilmina Tittle tattle"and "Sir Snobby Snobky and Miss Snobsky"! at our kitchen lunch I recalled that I once sat upon Gen. Sherman's lap - when a small girl at Watertown. & asked Papa if it was the Sherman who is to be
