I got dressed early & went down to No. 87. taking a nice little pumpkin pie which Mama sent to Rose & Ned. We all walked up to the Lyceum - & of course Kirkpatrick appeared with in the lobby. The play was "A Bachelor's Romance" & sort of a "Professor's Love Story" - with the "Professor" an Editor and the "secretary" his ward - a pair of poor literary men who owned half-interests in the same dress-suit. A maiden aunt with a sharp tongue but a tender heart. A wayward brother who turns good. A blasè society girl who becomes rural & enthusiastic a blonde widow who falls in love with the handsomest literary man. An old secretary with literary aspirations and a bookworm who goes fishing in a silk hat. An "ingenue" ward - so innocent - and a dear old Editor who loves her when he doesn't know it - does the renunciation act when he does, and then gets her after all - as the young lovers prize of $10000 spoils him. The house was full - & enthusiastic. John & Mae were there - Claude came home in the car with me - pretty late. Oct. 7. Wed. Sleepy this morning. It had been raining hard. I walked. Saw Mary & walked
