Going up Wiltise & I stopped at Jacob's to tell him to stop for me in the morning and Alice & Mrs. R quite perceptibly slowed up (poo' thing - she hadn't seen him for three days!) Alice walked on up to the cemetery with her while we came in and W. invited "the crowd" to the "ball". He then worried on the edge of the steps and finally whistled and then exclaiming "The Lady on the tiger" (man-eater!) dashed into the gloom and soon appeared with Alice. They both looked particularly handsome tonight - and Mrs. Miller & Mrs. Perrin too who came to the "ball" with us and Miss Field. We had a gay time there. Wiltsie does not dance and several other gentlemen did not. Several did - in white ducks & light coats. &c. The handsomest of them - Mr. Sumner - asked me to waltz but I declined. It was fun watching them and hearing "Day's orchestra" and seeing the artist Kenyon (who looks like one of Alice's "lost loves"!) stride around - and the "siren" (Miss Hager) in low neck & short sleeves. We didn't go home till half past ten or so. Then I said goodnight and wrote and packed.
