even the children - had on glasses. I tried to read a little & opened the window for a cool breeze at every station - and got it. Arrived at Wells Beach about half past three. Found Mr. Jacobs - the stage man - waiting for me and he said my wheel went over yesterday. The ride to Ogunquit was delightful - all the way in sight of the sea. The stage was very full. 2 babies 5 women in the middle - 2 men & 2 women in front and 4 trunks behind. Alice met me at the gate and took me to my 3rd story chamber- a lovely nook it has, with an ocean window and another. I immediately took two views from one & one from the other- but the film didn't roll straight. Alice was brown & charming as ever. I washed off a few layers of dirt and unpacked a few things and then went down into Alice's bay-window- ed room before suppper - where I met the people & which was good. We had baked beans & brown bread, of course, and I learned to eat steamed clams. After supper we sat on the front piazza in the sunset and the moonlight, watching the people going to a "ball" - very few men compared with ladies. A Mrs. Reading from New Jersey - quite frail and talkative & poetical and charming came down from the "lookout" to call on the Miss Bradley - & entertained us. Mrs. Miller (a sort of a Reflections-of a married-man- woman & family) I found very attractive indeed. She has a sweet cute smile, a dainty way & looks fine in red which she accordingly wears a good deal.
