stopped now & then to look at photographs, posters &c. and priced Claude's "Sandwich Man"

- at $1.00. Others were 25¢, 75¢ & 50¢. Finally we got down to Scribner's, where Ivan Somerville showed us a great deal - notably some of the most beautiful bindings I ever saw (enormously valuable). They were being sent away for an Exhibition. Saw a good many interesting books & some beautiful photographs of Venice. It had cleared off beautifully - & we separated then & I went shopping (& "observing") furiously. Bought me a silk waist (material) and a gingham one & a few little Knicknacks - Sothern's photographs for Ned & Mary. Studs for Mary's birthday. Hat pin for myself (Opal & diamonds!) &c. also gloves for Mama & me - & later - at Brentano's - "Merchant of Venice" for Papa. Met Claude at the Margaret Louisa at 4 and we went to Brentano's & had a chat with Sid Avery and saw a lot of French posters. Then we took a long walk-way down 14th Street - to get a cast for Miss Rathjen. & took the L up to the hotel, in time to rest an hour before dinner. Of course the dinner was a "small" little one - to music - and afterward we walked across to Broadway & 35th St. again to Mr. Mansfield's theatre to see (first, in the hall, some interesting photographs of Mansfield, John Drew & lovely Maud Adams. I never saw her look so lovely in my life. Her beautiful hair, skin & a lovely black velvet gown, in the first act, to set off its (the skin's!) whiteness, & afterward a delicious heliotrope color - with cerise collar & skirt lining - big, becoming hat & lovely white & yellow satin dinner dress in the last act. John Drew was the man who fixed everthing all lovely for everybody. He
