Jan. 20 Thurs. Mary invited me to Burton Holmes lecture tonight. I had a ticket which I let her mother take, and sat with Mary. The lecture was very good & Mary was very gracious. I told her Claude wanted me to go to Europe & she seemed to think that settled it - and began to bewail. "What should she do, if I went too &c! I was quite surprised - as I was last year. when she spoke in like manner. Con was here & has been nearly every evening lately - playing "Misery" &c. A. Jan. 21 Fri. Helen D. & I went to Lura's to dinner tonight, but it wasn't a brilliant success as H. felt blue & I was tired. Mary telephoned me this morning that she laid awake all night over "Europe" and she went up and talked to Charlotteabout it this noon. I went home & stayed with Helen tonight. She & Charlotte talk of nothing but the trip. Jan. 22. Sat. Stormy. & I didn't go out tonight. Con was here - with a bad cold. I'm reading "Vanity Fair" often. Jan. 23. Sun. A lovely windy pale sun burst this morning. And then an all day storm - just the kind of a day to stay home & loaf - & I did it. Reading &c in all the quiet corners. Con came to dinner & staid till 10:30 or so & he was sick with a cold & had to sit by the fire too - and play "Misery" and read "Princess Aline" and the bound Harper's.
