row in the balcony & it was all lovely - the scenery, the
costumes, the people and the play. It was a story of a man of 45
(Hackett) and a woman of 40 (Opp) both
handsome & fine - who had been friends - ultimate ones - 20
years before, and who dreaded growing old & almost decided to marry
& be "safe". Then each falls in love with someone much younger -
against their own wills, of course, & save themselves in time and
are made young again - for the whole spirit of the play is that
those who love never grow old. There is a young couple (Bessie
Tyree & Felix Morris) ill matched &
unhappy - the woman in love with another man (Alison) &
already in youth showing symptoms of age. Then there is a dear old
gray haired couple, the "Chicheles" so awfully in love &
so young & sweet in it - and pretty Annis & the
Frenchman
pair - & so on & so on. The stage was like a fashion plate -
Costumes &c &c. Hackett is a picture of Du
Maurier's of drawings - Some of the
smooth-faced ones - of "Barty Josseline" - and has such a handsome big figure & shoulders &
can wear any
kind of clothes. He's not so terrifically hand- some in the face,
but I liked him very well. The Princess Pannonia, too, was a
