Sept. 24 Sat.
Little new this week except that cold weather has begun and the
Equinoctial has been giving it - the good old fashioned way, the last 2 or
3 days. Claude has gone to
N.Y. with Mr. Higgins and
Papa is still in
Watertown. I've had a letter from someone
nearly every day 18 pages from Maude
Weirand 12 from Stanley Oliver
(my hero Zealander) - a nice letter too recalling our good times
together and wanting me to write and telling about everything but his
health - the most important
(20th)
thing - Wednesday - no - Tuesday night - Edith and
Nellie & Mary & I went down to Charlotte to Elsie's but found her in bed (she expected us to supper,
it seems) it was lovely down there - cool & crisp &
moonlight-y and a taste of Autumn in the air and of winter in the cold -
sounding breakers on the shore. We came back in one of the nice big
cars. Claude & I have been reading
Geo. Ade's "Pink Marsh" - very funny Negro
character. I had letters from Crabtree -
Dr. Jacobson ("Kind friend") &
Caldwell, promising me pictures. The other day I
stood by the back window looking out at the rain when someone whistled
& I looked & Schumacher was waving a French
book to me from Aroix's window. He
walked down with me today & said he was studying it. Mama's having her black silk made over
all new at Miss Colling's.
Sept. 25 Sun.
Today Frank Davis took me to
Niagara Falls on a 50¢ excursion - the cheapest
yet - Con sat & talked with me
about half an hour in the station. He
1898.
