wrote letters. Tuesday Edith invited me down to supper and we visited with her father & there met Mary & went to see Julia Arthur in "A Lady of Quality". It was really fine & she was startling beautiful in her boy's clothes - red & black satin - in the first act. We had a very gay evening and Mary and I walked home

Wednesday was quite cold - I went down to a funny place on Clinton St. with Con to supper - a german place with scenes painted on the wall & when the fried chicken, tongue-a-la-mode- potato Salad & coffee were soon "out of sight." Then we went up to the building & saw Theodore Roosevelt drive up and back down the Avenue & he took off his hat & bowed to us & we cheered & so did all the Spanish Club - in the same window. Then we walked down town & saw one of Sibley's awnings burn up - & then a couple of Burke's & then Con said "Come on up to Carroll's!" - but we went to the Cook Opera House instead & saw men jump over tables & chairs and pianos and dogs turn somersaults & ladies walk slack wires &
