Feb. 26. Friday Up to find a snowstorm - "Parrot" & toast for breakfast - and Charlotte - taking a beaten-up egg (her only breakfast) the last minute - almost while the car waited. I had the pleasure of riding down with her - a cold day - got a nice letter from Peg Hawley - in answer to my Valentine. Gymnasium tonight & only 4 there (and 1 visitor) Ned talked "Billy" and "Kirkpatrick" till I was ill then walked part way home with me. Feb. 27th Sat. Cold & shiney. Claude got a nice letter from Con Hillman - from Lousiana, saying he'll be here about the 10th - and we each got a lovely one from "Sue" about going to LaSalle - the "farm" &c. Almost froze coming down the hill tonight. Stopped to tell Ned I wouldn't be down - as I intended - to- night, and she made me stay then & there. The Thomases - jokes - beans- &c. for supper.; I asked Rose how to say "Yes" & "No" in Chinese. Then Ned asked her how to say "the only pebbles on the beach" - Rose replied there were no pebbles in China, where upon Ned retorted that "pretty rocky things came from there", which Rose took as a personal insult having come from there herself - and left the room - "Behold how large a matter a little fire Kindleth"! This somehow reminds me that Martha (at the office told me she met "Leftenant" (Shan's
pronunciation) Crosby - and asked me
