official report of it until Saturday the
7th
because the cable was cut - There were at least 300 Spaniards killed
and not one of our boys! It was a wonderful piece of heroism, too,
for the squadron sailed into a mined harbor & between forming
forts and repeatedly back & forth before the enemy - only drawing
away for an hour for breakfast!! un- heard of maneuver! Then there
have been battles at Canabas - at
Cienfuegos - Sampson has reduced the
forts at Porto Rico - and the Spanish squadron is
in western waters - Some of the Hempstead boys have
gone south (the 71st) - Our boys have had two weeks of
hard camp life - in the rain & storm with not food enough. Everyone
spends half their time before the bulletin board & the other
half reading the newspapers and the "extras" - so graphic - the news-
paper correspondents get the first of everything, so far - official
reports come in way behind.
3rd
Last week Tuesday - I went up to
Lura's to dinner & afterward we all
went to the Musee (didn't expect to)
& sat in a box & saw an absurdly bad show & the scenes
"in the wings" were the most entertaining of all, except perhaps the
song
