Tonight I've had a long visit with Mrs.
Behn
out under the trees. She told me a great many things about the girls
& Theo
& the boy & her management of things &c.&c.&c.
Edith say Helen is a "settled down married woman" now and weighs
150 pounds!!!
Sept. 8. Thurs.Sunday morning early Miss
Rathjen came around and said her father was dead. I lent
her a black silk waist &c. Staid home all day
5th
& read &c. It was very hot. Monday was
hot, too, at first. Edith came
while we were at breakfast and afterward she & I walked down to
Mary's and
spent an hour there while it poured out doors. Came home & left
"Diana" and then walked over to the
office & saw Gilmore a minute &
had a little squabble with him about his D.E.K. pin he
offered to let me wear. Then went down to Miss Rathjen's to see if I could do anything & came
home (with a quart of ice cream) to one o'clock dinner. Read some
this p.m. & Herbert Caring came to say goodbye
(He's going to
St. Bernard's to be a priest) & Edith came & embroidered, while I made scrapbook.
Mary came up too,
for a while but couldn't stay to supper as Edith did.
Mrs. Behn & Amelie were over a little while in the
evening & Claude was
1898.
