"Vanity Fair". Con came up & we sat by the fire late after Mama went to bed. Claude came & we turned down the light & were cozy and talked. Con went about 11:15. It was a frosty night. Jan. 18 Tues. A beautiful day - clear & sunny & cool. I walked about 8 or 10 miles back & forth. Went to the Burton Holmes lecture on Thessaly tonight & enjoyed the pictures im- mensely - especially those of the monasteries up on pinnacles of rock - seemingly so inaccessible (& really, too without ropes & things.) In the party were Burton Holmes& Marion & John Wright of Rochester & a Young lady friend of theirs. Their pictures looked most natural & were recognized. I was surrounded by the Rochester 400 - All gushing women & self-conceited men - no, not all - but it did provoke me to hear one say, in a patronizing way - "How do Walter, when'd you get back?" - & not wait for an answer - to Walter Smith who's been in the Wilds of Mexico & a lot of other places for months. He looks so much better (in health & otherwise) since he got back - & has a good color and wears red ties and more becoming clothes. I rather like him. When I got home I mended Claude's Paris gloves - which still last!
