Apr. 25. Mon.Rose Mills married today - to that
Hiram Powers she was engaged to once before
&c. A nice day. We were all going to the theatre tonight but
Mary, Alice & Nellwanted
to go to the drill, the last minutes - so changed the seats to
Wednesday, but Con
went with me to see "The Royal Box" - which was very
good. They used a real proscenium box & the "Prince of
Wales"
Count Felsen & the Countess sat in it and
the stage manager came out and "announced" really & there was a scene
in the star's dressing room - Coghlan's
"Clarence" was a little too "old" - The scenery &
costumes were good.
Con indulged in "Boston chips" & we had
"iced grape juice" afterward. A fine evening.
Apr. 26. Tues. to Fri. 29th.
War and war talk and the atmosphere of anxiety, "extras" &
disappointment. Two French lessons & war talk in French with
"Jean Baptiste" Aroix & today -
Friday - the 1st & 8th received their orders to go to camp at
Hempstead Plainson Sunday night. Frank is all broken up- because his
mother is - of course he volunteered -&in a
letter from Ned saying
Billy has too -& Carl
Tucker.
Apr. 30 Sat.
A lovely day. I lunched with Mary at Sibley's
& had a very nice time. Left the office at five - stopped to say
"Goodbye" to Frank, but he'd
1898.
