Helen Davis & Mary came & we went up to South Park
in the wind and sat on the grass and found 4-leaf clovers &
talked and "had a good time". Helen
visited me to dinner so I went - stopping at the house only to leave
word. We rode up Pearl St., thereby saving about
3/4 of a mile. Charlotte was just getting up, and after washing &
resting a little we had dinner and a good one - roast beef - potatoe,
coffee, bread & butter, lettuce, tomato & mayonaise. Then Angel's
food & straw- berries & cream. We had a jolly time at dinner &
after- ward. Discussed the Wilburs &c. and books &
things. In the midst of an interesting talk Harry
Backus came (& staid all the
afternoon) and then Miss Farley & later
Mary & Lura (on wheels). We got to talking about a vacation in a
canal boat - 2 weeks in July - to N.Y. &c. and
got quite enthusiastic. We 3 girls & Mr.
B. left about six & rode down the Avenue together. I
found
Edith here and went upstairs to wash
& dress while she was here. Helen
& Will came before dark - on their wheels - and we had a
chat out in the yard - if an hour. Then I came in to write - & now
lunch & reading, bath & bed.
Con came home with Claude, after I'd retired.
May 31. Monday
Pleasant, but windy. Flags flying. Got up rather early for a holiday
and before few Mary
& Edith came to say they
couldn't go riding because of the wind, but wanted me to go to the Parade.
I had to wait till 10, as I expected the people, and Will came for me & I rode over the
river with him and Helen
, but
we missed the
1897.
