and of course saw lots of familiar faces on the way. As soon as we
got off the car Con bought peanuts
and when the Italian looked doubtfully at a jammed 5¢ piece, Con
said "oh! that's all right - The Elephant stepped on it this
morning!" We gazed upon the bill of an enormous "Wild Man of
Borneo" tearing a sailor limb from limb, and then went in
to the Animals - which were very fine - fully a dozen elephant - camels -
ostrich - fine tigers - a pair of lions
("Nero" was one) and so on - Con says "Now let's go and see the monkeys - They're
expecting me - I promised them some dessert this morning" - Then he
actually made me drink some circus lemonade very wet and very cold!
and a very - long drink! - but anythingbut strong. The man assuring us all the time
that it wouldn't hurt us a bit! &c. &c. Inside
Con found the best reserved seats there
were, I'm sure - and we sat on the umbrella & spread out
programs and peanuts and candy & opera glasses &c. and
watched the people and the camera - fiend (clown) in front - who insisted
upon taking people's pictures - I saw Walter
Smith & Geo. Wilder & others I knew
- of course the circus was fine -
1897.
