Sunday. May 22
Early this morning I heard Mama out
for the paper and I went to meet her & sure enough Frankhadn't passed! & weren't
we joyful!! He came home very early Tuesday morning & his accounts
of things made us even gladder he wasn't there - tho' - he does seem
to feel terribly bad about it. They said he had heart disease but it
was found out afterward that a corporal or a sergeant had to be sent home with each squad of men & of course they
chose him for the one - Will O. didn't
pass either - (out for a good reason - no "heart disease") and
Helen rejoiced. Aroix seemed delighted & complimented
us highly on Tuesday - & on Friday said he was "so delighted" to see
that France was after all friendly to Americans
He is very nice indeed - promises to write us a letter in French and
to bring me a
16th
little French flag. Monday night Con celebrated my birthday by taking &
me to see "Incog." at the Cook's & afterwards we rode up & got phosphate
&c. Lura was there - & the Mac Arthur's. I had lots of lovely
presents - a steamer trunk (or more than money
enough for it) from Claude -
pocketbooks, books, tie, pincushion &c.&c. & Everyone was so
nice and of course Frank's coming
back was the best of
18th
all. Wednesday we had the Pedro Club at
Rogers. Mary got the ring & we had a
Sunday. May 22
