Chat & Helen &
Mr. Davis - sent my goodbyes to
Frank - I'm sorry for the dear Family -
and walked home with Papa - Then
wrote to Hilda. Hope to see the boys
march to war this p.m. 10:30 p.m. After dinner I
was up stairs reading and just ready to start for
Lura's & there meet the Davis's & see the boys go, when
John & Mae Stull came - & they hadn't been
here for ages - so they staid an hour or so & we had very nice visit
and when we heard the first bomb - about 6:10 we knew the boys had
started, so we rushed over to the
Cutler Building and up into our offices
- The
Cutlers & Mama
& Papa were there & soon the
companies came marching past thro' the crowds - the Sons of
Veterans & veterans and city cadets & bands and
Naval Reserves and finally the Eighth - all
loaded down & followed by the First - and proud we were -
but our hearts so full of the tragedy that we could only wave a little.
Frank was in the first rank & looked
as handsome as I ever saw him in the harmonious blues and brownish
grays of his uniform and equipments - He was leaning forward &
forging ahead but his face as he looked up at us and about him was
tragic - and all looked solemn Enough - the escort companies
