the villain (Alec) just right - & especially fine in the last act. The milkmaids splendid (& funny) & the men - The "family" first rate & "Tess" a wonder in acting (she really didn't look the part which made it more wonderful still) the scenery fine and the last act - the sunrise at Stonehenge most impressive - Lura & party sat next us & Con came home with me. Today I read & loafed till after dinner & then took a walk with Con, calling at Mary's & at John & Mae's - Mr. Castleman was there & says he's going to war, if it breaks out - poor man - I s'pose he feels he has nothing to live for since his wife died. When we got home I made toast & we had chocolate & fresh eggs & a chat. Then & read McClure's. Hilda's brother is dead - So Maude writes Mary -Gertrude sent an invitation to me to spend my vacation at Miss Bake's in the Berkshires - but was delighted to hear of my other prospect. Edith went to Niagara Falls for over Sunday, Nellie Mac to Holley & Freddie's in N.Y. for 2 weeks. Our offices are nearly done & I'm busy with reading &c. & more in love with Chat than ever. Have begun taking French lessons with the girls Tuesday's & Fridays - Aroix is a "peach". Mr. Dean's denouement this week.
