Dec. 21. Tuesday A nice frosty day. Shopped, of course. Met Mary for a chat & Ned came up to the office & went home to supper with me. We shopped on the way. After supper Ned wrote to "Billy" while I dressed and we went to the theatre - Crane - Sat in the front row of the balcony and enjoyed it very much. The widow Annie Irish was awfully stunning. Especially in a green plush gown and a big feathered hat - in the last act. The "young planter" was handsome & reminded me a little of George Weir, & Helen of Richard Mansfield - Crane was something of a disappointment in the part - but as Harvey put it - They were all pretty good "except that wooden Indian on roller skates" who played the part of the overseer. The scenery of the Fairfax Mansion & "Lover's Gate" was very good & the whole play extremely pleasing. Harvey says the man who played the lover - Walter Hale - used to be a draughtsman of his in St. Paul & came of a very good Minneapolis family Wilmot Castle was there & came and talked tons between the acts. We walked home. Dec. 22 Wed. Slept well, but was awfully tired this morning. Left Ned at the breakfast table and fled for the office & a busy day. Shopped with Mama at noon and then lunched
