soup was on. Had a good & deliberate dinner & afterward Will & I sped away to the 3 o'clock car on the Gorge Railway (Mary was going but again disappointed me) We met Mr. Tucker a minute before the car came. The ride down the river was very beautiful. Then almost tragic & sublime as we passed the tremendous Rapids & the awful whirlpool - then the pathetic old bridge - with its dangling remains & down to sunny Lewiston - where the river is a lake (with deadly little whirlpools in it) and the hotels overhang it and are labeled "Angler's Retreat" and the like. We had the windows open all the way up and arrived in plenty of time for a nice talk and another lunch before train time - six o'clock. Will & Ned saw us to the station - dear girl. I wonder if she wasn't a bit homesick when she turned away - and we three read nearly all the way home (Ned lent me "Madelon") except that we got out and walked about at Albion - where we stopped "15 minutes for supper". Papa was at the station. He said the boys were coming but were at Ohare's (I was glad - for I was pretty much used up) Had lunch later - with the dear people & then to bed - so tired. Nov 29. Monday Busy & almost sick. Everybody nice. Con came up tonight & played his new banjo. I wrote letters.
