fancy work and welcomed us & sat down again & later a man
strolled in (this time Mr. Zealand(?) of Hamilton) & was
more or less playful with the "elder females" & then we all went down
to the Armory, where Captain Ashton in
the uniform of the "Dufferin Rifles" and a new "Giley"
hat marched up and escorted us past disordered rooms & tables laid for
a banquet to the "officer's gallery" and there we had the pleasure
of remarking the Canadian braves in squads & companies, while officers
(in dark uniforms & black gloves clanked up & down & the
band & the bugle corps both bellowed forth at once & "our Captain
got quite hoarse "inspecting" another came up & talked to us.
Was so sorry he couldn't go back to the house with us &c.&c. We
had to go "rather early" (9:30 or 10) because someone was to call - only
Mr. Spotten
(the funny man) came (on account of the drill & work at the bank
for Gibson). Hal strolled in!
then George & Mr & Mrs.
Cockshutt made a short call & then Mr.
Spotten drew us pictures - &
George unbent and became a whole minstrel show -
sang songs (at you) acted, danced, whistled -
& we all joined in the choruses. Hal &
Mr. Spotten marching about the room & dancing
also. Mr. S.
"recited" us for (martBill Nye - he's very bald- and something from
"Truth" and George roared
