pretty - & evidently hadn't a thought in her head but of society & dress. There was a "Miss Christy" who was no longer young - far from it - but tried to be most awfully hard - There was "Miss Smith of England" - who wore Princess of Wales bangs and awful clothes. There were girls whom we'd met the night before - looking quite different in daytime clotes &c.&c. and our hostesses were by no means the least unique. Maude had come later - & she & Nell & Mary & Edna Wilks, Miss Gibson & her guest (?) & young Mrs. Gibson (who got a prize - a worked covering cloth) & I ate together - oyster patties & thin bread & butter- chicken salad, coffee, cake and bonbons & salted almonds - with cayenne pepper on! We gabbled away till after seven & then started off (when you tell your hostess you've enjoyed it she smiles broadly & say "hm-yes.") into the very dark darkness - where the same narrow little gravel walk which is in front of every Brantford house got mixed up with the same little trimmed fir-trees & didn't get untangled till we got to the sidewalk. We went home for half- an hour with Miss Gibson - where the same (or similar) ladies rose as we entered the 15 ft high drawing room, & laid aside their
