and secreted underground until brought to Canada much later. They showed us a fine old bible dated 1701 - and containing on the fly leaf the autographs of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales - Lord Duffern, the Duke of Connaught - and others. Then we were escorted to the greenhouses - gorgeous with crysanthimums, and were loaded with them of course - Mr. Mason being almost hidden behind a big yellow one - and completely so when he got in the carriage between Mary & I with ours and Hilda and "Capt." Ernest Ashton opposite smiling at us. We drove down to Mohawk, the historic church - climbed an iron fence to look upon the grave of Captain Brant & his son and finally entered the church by force - of Capt. Ashton's shoulders - as the key would not turn. The old interior has been covered & changed - but the same hand-sawed clapboards & pretty little belfry are on the outside yet. We drove back to Brantford - arriving at dusk - in time for a chat before the drawing room fire & a try at the two step again - as the "linen" (crash) had been put down - after supper & a little more loafing - we dressed. In my green & thin black organdie, with green ribbons & "jewels" & fan & chain - Mary
