1897.
Nov. 9. Tuesday The queerest day - Weather - wise. We were eating breakfast - at 8:20 when there came a flash of lighting & a thundering and it got as dark as night - so we had to light the gas, but it only lasted a minute or so - then torrents of rain fell and in 10 minutes the sun was shining again. This was repeated (the showers) at intervals all day - rain and vivid sunshine and only once again - in the afternoon - did it thunder & grow so very dark. I lunched with the Vagabonds & had a jolly time - but Harvey arrived very late - just as we were leaving. John (Stull) was there - They call him "His Honor." Tonight we went (with umbrellas) & to hear Anthony Hope read - "The Professor in the Apple Orchard" - "If love were all" and some of the "Dolly" Dialogues. I liked him very much. He is big and well dressed and would be handsome if his nose were not quite so large, nor his hair quite so thin on top. He certainly is not bad looking and he has a charming manner and above all a most charming English voice and accent. We came home in the most gorgeous cold blue moonlight - as lovely in its way as the glimpses of sunlight had been all day. Nov. 10. Wed. Pleasanter. Mama came down & we went shoppping & lunched at Sibley's. Staid home tonight & sewed.
