It was about 12:30 by the time we got started & we went to Scottsville. The wind was partly against us, but the path was fine - and so beautiful with golden-rod and purple asters. We stopped to rest a few times. Once by the ice pond once at "Locust Hurst", where we "jollied" the Little Lord Fautleroy with auburn curls & Ned treated us to cider &c. & the (from "hand- picked" apples!) At one of the little bridges where we stopped for a picture we saw Mattie Watts & young Serirs

& at the "baldhill" Edith got in a hole & some dogs barked at her & an old English man talked to us. We got to the Cargill House a little after two - and after getting washed up had a very good dinner - and a very jolly one. Mabel was so funny & we all "jollied the brides". She said Ruth Ashmore's Column in the Ladies Home Journal told "How to get married, when asked! &c". We started right away after dinner & went over to a straw stack on the top of the hill where we rested sometime. Then we started away in goodshape for home - the air was fine - the sky & valley beautiful and it was down grade. I was spinning along ahead about two miles from Scottsville, when Mabel (who was first behind) said "Matie's off". I looked around & dismounted to behold Matie wheel lying in the dust & Ned picking her up & Matie fainting away. Of course I rushed to
