we got off for another little stroll - from there to the store I
rode in the pilot house - learned from the Captain
about Channels & sunken rocks and the new canal &c.&c.
blew the whistle and watched the beautiful lake & island and the
still more beautiful sunset sky. At the store I got two letters. Mr. Dymond
got one which made him feel
very good. We were glad to get home about 8 - and I went right to my
room for the night - tired & nervous.
July 31. Saturday
All were late to breakfast. It was a beautiful morning, but very
windy & white-cappy. We spent it mostly on the rocks behind the
house and under a tree near the rocks - reading & sleeping and
talking. I saw the Ponds off in the "Libbie" for
Eel Creek and chatted awhile with the
Dymonds & Lindsays on the piazza
(Then talked to Griffith. Took Mrs
Graham's &
Jimmie's pictures &c.&c. At dinner we had a
fine baked lunge Dr. L. caught - only the
Lindsays & ourselves were there the
Dymonds having gone to Eel Creek
too. The afternoon I spent in the hammock with Thackery
- & slept. Mr. Graham & innumerable bundles
came on the "City" and Dr. L. fished for sunfish off
the deck. The Libbie came back just before supper
One of the most tragic days of my life.
