('98)I'll never forget the beautiful dark clouds & the ruddy
brilliant west - the little church standing out golden against the
dark woods - & the "priest's" long dark figure in the doorway -
reminding, me more of Thymert - curé of the
Lannions in "Greece" than anything else. Oh, its fine
to live in the wood with "Nature"!
took us up into
"Father" Hartley
little new church - St. Matthew - and Mr.
H.
himself welcomed us in. It was a pretty little church. He showed us
the embroidered vestments, altar cloths, "purifiers" etc.etc. He
looked very handsome & sincere & good & I should have liked to
take his picture as he stood in the door of his little gothic church.
We walked down & cursed the lock & Ralph,
Ruth & I explored a picturesque old mill now a
deserted one - then we had some snap shots at the lock - waiting for the
boat & when she came Mr. D
told us
his rather picturesque history - squandering his inheritance in
Cambridge, Eng. - His clergyman father
"in a good
living" & his sudden determination to be a minister & his journey
to the Wilds of Canada. The beauty of his
face & his character & all. One can see his friend Mr. D.
almost worships
the ground he
walks upon. Then we got out the things & had supper. (Some were
things of Mr. Dymond's
& some from
the hotel) and then we played Pedro
as we went thro' Lovesick at
Burleigh
