a good deal - Maud was delighted
with the "Twelve Perfects" (She asked, too,
if all American girls were as nice as I?!!!) & we counted the
beautiful stars and the electric launch "Libbie" brought the
Ponds in & we "jollied" the crew & we lay
& counted stars & picked our constellations (they were very
bright) till 10:30 or so. Then came up to Ned's room for more sky- larking& some water melon
which
Mrs. Graham had put in the ice box for us - dear
soul! The girls dispersed with great hilarity & talk of "Nux"
& such-like things & thanks that a doctor was "handy-by" -
Ned seemed much pleased with the
ShakespearCharlotte& I gave her (8
volumes of the "Temple") and was very sweet about it to me -
as she caressed me on my chair arm at
Burleigh - I wish I could describe the "parlor"
there. Roses in carpet, a locked piano. Horse hair sofas &
pictures of
Kate Claxton & Buffalo Bill! In the night a
storm (mostly wind) came up and
Mary visited me an hour and a half
Ned's awning got loose,
Jimmie
came up
1897.
