were left under the stars & Hilda put her head in my lap & the girls sang nearly everything they ever heard of - from "Tommy Atkins" to "America" & we talked & told stories & listened to the frogs & watched the water & the glory of the Heavens till eleven. Then Maud, Mrs. D. & I sat up after that to write letters! And is this going to bed early? Those girls are quite fun & our sort - Canadian but up-to-date in their way, very, & Mr. D.
is entertaining. We talked cakes, bonfires & excoursions tomorrow - for Ned's birthday. July 21. Wed. Ned's 25th birthday - Cool & lowering. Our piazza congress after breakfast (on the piazza) decided it would be a nice day to row to Burleigh Falls - so to Burleigh Falls we rowed - we four. Ned "went steerage" in the stern. Edith sat in the bow & hemmed napkins (till her needle broke) and Mary & I were crew. Halfway over to Grassy Isle we met "[illegible]" & Ralph & Mr. Gray & I lent Mr. G. a roll of film and we "swapped" the time of day (They were on their way over to see us.) At Grassy we hailed Harold True on the pier and when we got halfway up or so
