partly on a hassock. I said "oh, Mother, what
shall I do?" and she said "Telephone for
Dr. Grant" and I ran, leaving Father and
Mother to take her up after I had taken off
her hat. I called Dr. Grant but he wasn't in - would be in in

conscious - I ran back and called up
Claude, (who was reading
Schopenhauer's
essay on "Death"!) and told him Char
had had a sort of a fainting spell, that I had called Dr.
Grant and asked if I should call Dr. Ely. He said
I couldn't get him & Dr. Grant was all right - In a
few minutes Claude came but before that I had
taken off Char's collar and talked to her.
She was partly rational but not all. Told me to "take the cover off the
basket" (which was all ready for the Baby) asked "where the children were"
(possibly she meant the Steinhausen twins, whose windows were
opposite - but I don't know) and asked what things were. She seemed worried at
Mrs. Caring
and asked who she was. I said Mrs.
Caring - and she said "Mrs.

I don't know Mrs. Caring -Then I said
"no our neighbor, Mrs. Caring" and she smiled
sweetly and said politely "How do you do
