in front of the pilot house. It was a charming ride - that and the other one -
after the "carry" (on a little train) It was cool enough but not cold, the sun
was just clouded enough now & then to be pretty & the mountains &
colors beautiful. The Marion River was not quite so charming as before
(no roses this time.) We arrived at Blue Mt. dock (quite changed) about 10:30 and insisted on going to the
Mt. House (tho' booked for the Lake) A man who was on the boat rode up
with us, and talked. We found a good room on the 3rd fl. with two beds - &
took it. Wrote a letter & read a little & had dinner. Mr.
& Mrs. Parmelee
(Sherby Murray's sister) & little Hiram were there.
Talked to them afterward. It was rather tame & Mr. Merwin
older & less inter- esting than formerly. Meals not so good. After dinner
I wrote Mother & then we climbed the hill
where there was an open shack with a beautiful view. Stayed there quite a
while and then found a piney seat up higher, near a cottage - where Mame read aloud from a magazine we found there!
Walked down - & scrambled - another way. Took a trail over toward
Eagle Nest - quite a ways. A very pretty one - & when we
finally got back to "civilization", I found I had lost a heel off my shoe & had
to take the other one off with my nail file! After supper - a moonlight "sit"
on the piazza. The view is as lovely as ever it was.
