Hamilton & there was fine singing. The girls & boys & Mr. Best alone &c. &c. "The Darkey Sunday School" "The German Fifth" "Mary had a swarm of bees - & they were very wise. They followed Mary everywhere, cause Mary had the hives" - The "gin rickeys hang" land of - some - (thing or other where rivers of beer abound, where grit rickeys hang on the trees, and high-balls roll on the ground" &c. &c. It was jolly & we were late home. Aug. 9. Sun. A beauteous day. Very clear & still with lovely cloud shadows. This morning I rowed the girls "up Johnny-Mack Bay" - and we explored a bit. Finally (after some pictures) settling in the edge of a beautiful forest at the begi- nning of the "trail" (they said) Mame read aloud from Stewart Edward White's "Forest" and it was better than going to church. Wonderful and uplifting. Oh! This lovely land up here near Heaven! We came back to lunch (no dinner and a tragedy, for the ice cream was salted!) & afterward lay in hammocks - learned a stanza of Henry Van Dike's
