play awhile & walked back by the river all the way, down the river road. Had a nice late supper. July 4 Sun. Got up early - a gorgeous day - ate breakfast, packed luncheon & took the 9:10 Erie train to Mt. Morris. Mary Dickens too. We arrived at 10:30 and found a surrey & two horses & a sandy haired man waiting (I'd ordered it) and started right off on our long drive - up hills &c. out of Mt. Morris, out the Nunda road to the forks & then out the Portage road - up high on the top of things - past lovely farms - many of them tenantless (belonging to Wadsworth's other large estates) and after a long time turned to the right and started down a lovely road to the river. It was very steep (like "Black guards" in [illegible]) and we got out & walked & let the carriage wait at the bottom. It was beautiful. I snapped the girls' pictures part way down & a little farther the lovely hills on the opposite bank. We crossed at a tiny settlement called "St. Helena" (not much but a bridge) & then turned to the left & climbed again thro' beauteous grass grown ruts & lovely trees & things. About one we came into a little grove & found ourselves on the very top of some "high banks" above the river and "Devil's table" a queer formation & looking down upon the slippery mouth of Wolf Creek far below us - a must beauteous dining room - and here we ate our delicious lunch.
