only one) up to Camp, Mr. Best met us there & the
camp did seem rough steep. We are on the top tier of tents - where
we can see the ripple of the water & way down below us, thro' the trees.
We regretted much that we could not settle, but the man I didn't bring up our
trunks till night. We had a big camp fire after dinner sat in the shack while
they sang & talked. Mr. Best was very nice. He's a sort of a matinee-idol sort of a looking man, with
much magnetism. We explored the camp some & planned "a clearing".
Aug 4. Mon.
It thundered in the night & rained some & was quite warm today.
Settled tents (& took their pictures) Hung hammocks (in a nice open space
over the lake & under the trees in front of the girls tent) we have 4 as
we each brought one &
Mr. Best gave us one. Wrote letters & lay in the hammocks
listening to the ripple of the water & the rustling of the leaves.
Mame read aloud, too. After lunch she
& I went down & called on
Mrs. Pitkin, whose tent had been struck
