dollars! but they would have had to admit Gilmore knew more about it than they did! And still I am surprised at my letter! When he writes his poor old Father as tho' he was a 5 years-old child & talks to JW cold bloodedly about his "probably not lasting all winter" a fine old man - as proud as he is! I shan't write anything more about my business troubles - until the smashup - mine or theirs - comes but much as it has hurt me and not withstanding the bitterness- I am glad it has happened now (I am writing a week after) for now we understand each other and my conscience is clear. I do make mistakes being mortal (but I don't think enough to worry JG.) but I know well enough it's my independent manner he doesn't like - the more abject one is the better. I must learn to be a tool. But I do like the business and I have worked hard at it and I mean to still - this letter shall make no differ- ence with that - but I'll try to help still when I don't approve and be used unobtrusively - if I continue to be used. J.W. has been unusually nice to me (I think JG sent him copies of our correspond- ence) and JG. got back Friday (8th) and took pains to be very polite. The matter was not alluded to.
