cut-up picture puzzle which Alice sent me
for Christmas. It was hopeless - then -
E. told me all about Ida's last summer's flirtation with young Maise -
the family row - why she left, & how the M's
don't speak to Ida &c.
&c. a lot of foolishness & misunderstanding on both sides, as usual.
Bess & Mame 'phoned me. In the evening Father & I
went up to
Cro'nest I had a nice visit with Jo & CFB
by the fire. It was a cold bright moonlit night.
Jan. 2. Sat.
Busy-Home to lunch. Had a nice chat with
Mabel on the phone tonight. Papa read Collier's
aloud and I pasted photographs in books
Jan. 3. Sun.
Nice day. Read "Testing of Diana Mallory" which is fine. To
Cro'nest p.m. Played blocks &c alone
with Henry till Aunt Jo
came down. Didn't stay long. Rode over to Davis's for a short call. Miss Kilbury there
Lura looked very much used up. They are
anxiously awaiting Kate's letter from
Sicily, where she's looking after Earthquake
sufferers. They didn't know but she might be in Messina
the 28th but fortunately she wasn't - but wired for
money from Syracuse
, some days after
Jan. 4. Mon.
Today I got a very cruel letter from
Mr. Cutler - I shall always keep it - but
after 20 years to think he should write me like that! But I might have known
he would for he is cruel to his relatives - very - his brother - everybody
