quickly and nearly everyone went in bathing. We didn't, but sought our restful hammocks and enjoyed each other's society. After dinner we rowed down back & Camp Island. (They wanted we to explore it - but it was so queer & the leaves rustled so, I didn't) to "The loonery" - a most wierd and awful place, with stranges noises, birds, animals, breezes &c. It was very queer. I don't wonder Mrs. Ely saw foxes here last night - that the maniac laughter originated here and that it was mist. Shrouded in my sunrise picture. Only after emerging from Camp Island did I feel same again. Camp fire &c afterward and a wakeful night. Perhaps it was "Father's" birthday cake! He had two & becandled - handed to him with a speech as we arrived - and afterward the youngster went to Stony Island and celebrated till a late hour. He's 21(?) Aug 11. Tues. Bob had a wakeful night too, and was sick a bed all day with a bad head- ache. It rained too, hard in the a.m. & was generally miserable. I made blue prints &c. After lunch it rained so I had to wait. The boys threw every cup & glass from the dining table to the kitchens (Father, Joe
