& lots of pictures to take it only there had been light enough. I took the
girls just emerging from the trail - where the camp was - As we got to the
shore of the Jessup
we saw Fred McKown in an old leakey flat-boat poling it
to the further shore where waited his mother, Russell &
Becky Barnum. They managed to get in - with great
effort & then the boat stuck on something and slowly & twirled around.
The ladies sat down & got right up again (it was wet)
Somebody pushed & poled &c It was a very amusing journey (to us on
shore) but finally after many gyra- tions, just as the boat should have stood
still, it began to float downstream. That was too much for Mrs.
McKown. She picked up her skirts, stepped out into the water
& handled it ashore by the rope! Much to the amazement of the occupants
and the amusement of the spectators - Finally all the stragglers got to the launch
& we had a jolly ride down stream. I sat next to Miss
Griswold & find her as nice as she is homely. Bess took my picture & I took hers - also one of
Mr. Wood chatting so politely with
Mrs. Dinsmore (!) They were all failures! Arrived at camp we
had just time to "tidy" for late dinner & then a row
till dark. There are such dear nice rows. We all enjoy them. Sat up for the
moon, which was rather late.
