after that. We talked about the baby "Katherine Chandler" as Char always called it and I asked her if she would be disappointed of it was a boy - saying I preferred boys. She said "Oh, no," she liked boys best, but Claude wanted a girl - so she did. She didn't seem to realize at all how sick she had been, but rather feel that her time was near, tho' she had no pain. Once she said with a little sigh - I almost said a "bright" little sigh, "Oh, it's hard to be a woman" - but immediately afterward "But it's worth all this and more for a baby like Henry" - in such a loving tone. We sort of wandered off and spoke of Charella. I forget just how it started - Char said how charming she thought her, and I did too - but as a friend - not as a brother's wife. Then I told her how pleased Mother and I had always been that Claude married her and she was glad. Oh, I never can forget how irrestibly sweet she was as she lay there talking - so bright, with her "feeling fine" to Claude when he came in. When the nurse was ready and Dr. Young had come I took Claude down stairs to have an orange and we sat and talked. I told him I was so
