8/15/09.
Stayed to supper & we had a nice talk. "Friday" the cat was affectionate. We tried to read each other's palms & France. Came home about 9 & wrote. Rainy a letter from Mary Dickens with flowers from Mandalay. Aug. 16 Monday. Rainy & disagreeagble. Lunched with Mary at Sibley's & she told me all about Pt-au. Baril &c. I'm afraid "Hammie" is getting himself disliked - but she won't say much about it Found Hemeny & Winnie at 34 - storm bound (thunder shower) They staid to supper & Henry was the sweetest ever. He watched the "tinkle bell" (Jap. wind bell) & talked about the "tea party" &c. and finally rode Aunt Maisie pickaback down to the street car and kissed her goodbye - the dearie - Sewed tonight. Aug. 17. Tues. Dearest Claude home today & successful in his G.C. Sta quest to New York - if it goes! Harvested pears with Father at noon and tonight went with Mary D. to "The Love Cure" - A spectacular - Merry Widowy opera - "Theatrical" beautifully staged and costumed too. Aug. 18 Wed. More rain & cold weather. Meta told me all about the intense suffering & heroism of Dr. Engert who is at Death's door - very low indeed. Meta & Amelie see him often & it is very hard for all of them, for he must die soon!
