& some day ones from J.M.
and I met Leighton Steele for 10 minutes (the first time!) and he showed his white teeth and said nice things and after- ward Helen (who's fond of him) told me more about his tragedy. Then there were evenings of reading aloud singing & playing cards or toasting marshmallows inside - a horrid last Sunday - muggy & disagreeable & Trudy with a sick headache - a fearful thunderstorm in the night - a mirror - like row around the island in the dusk & several sunset rows - and a sunset picnic at dear Mandalay - Trudy - Harriett Seltzer, Myrtie Hyland & I - tea on the rock, the Sunset and then a marsh- mallow roast and a weird ride home. A call on the Howson's & one on the Moshers. An invitation to Mandalay - (too rough to go) a day of high wind and another nearly as bad. (but we rowed) chats with Helen & with the Skipper (about Milly & Matrimony & Jack
