enamored of Edith - at least
Edith is one of her enthusiasms. I
am no good at describing - or at analyzing - but she's a girl who is
as plain to me as an open book - just this first time I've seen her -
she'd never "keep me guessing" as Con used to say. We came back to the Earth at last (or I
did) and strolled back to the car, Edith and I riding back- ward facing a most glorious
sunset, all the way. The Heavens do certainly "declare the Glory of
God" Sometimes, just as "The Firmament shows his handiwork"
- and when
earthley worries are to be made trivial the way is to contemplate the
Heavens and the Firmament (N.B. I've tried it!) We got very much down
to Earth when we went to "Jerry Flynns" to supper, but found
they only served "lunches" now - but not bad ones. Then we went out
on the Cottage Esplanade - opposite the lake
and sat on a very dewy seat, very close together
and hated to go home, till we were so sleepy we had to. We didn't wait for fireworks.
Aug. 27. Sun.
Another almost perfect day.
Went over to the Carings with
Mother right after break- fast.
(Mrs. C. sent for us to see the
flowers) Ray
died Friday morning
having been sick since a year ago last March with very
serious Kidney trouble. (one Kidney was
removed last fall) He was a brave, cheerful soul.
