All went out - to Maplewood to a chicken dinner - A most elaborate one - We had quite a jolly time & came home about 8:30. The girls were all dear to me - I begin birthdays being blue and end them by being another Kind of "teary" May 17-18 Fri-Sat. Uneventful days - & not altogether pleasant ones - Business competion looks serious. &c.&c. Sat. night went to Cook's with Laura, Lura, Mary & saw a very good bill - Robt. Hilliard played a little story of Arthur Coslett Smith's. I am very tired these days May 19. Sun. Rained this morning - I began "Joseph Vance" & then went tight asleeep. Fine this p.m. The boys put up the hammock & I wrote & read &c. Here is something from "The Lonely Lady of Grosvenor Square"
