Mechanics (Sibley's's half holiday begin) and then came home a little
while ( Mother
at Cro'nest) and started off
again on "Diana" for the Park and certainly
did have a nice afternoon. They had Automobile Gymkana
shorts in the dell below the hill road - most picturesque - Tilting
for scarfs & rugs - obstacle races - & a
potatoe race (very funny) & balancing feats. And a fine polo game (that
with ponies) It was an ideal afternoon
lots of autos & people out, music, & a nice man next to me who
was folksy. A young doctor-man was one of the star performers. It
threatened a thunderstorm about 5 or so - so I went home & had a
nice bath before supper - made lemon jelly, & lemonade, had supper
& rode Diana again out to the
illumination which was certainly surpassingly beautiful. 3000
lanterns, low among the bushes along the river - the bridge, boat
houses, decks, boats &c all illuminated and a procession of 30
trimmed canoes (beside many others with lights) The pageant started
"way up the river some where & came down the right bank to the
Oak hill dock
(red fire &c.) turned & came up the
left back. There were also a number of
