Jan. 13 Sun. Home this morning. Had a long visit with Char & Claude in front of Cro'nest fire this p.m. Char worried about domestics &c. but we all cheered up. Claude took in $12000 last year & put away $3500! the GVC &c. Walked home in the twilight. Henry lovely today, Jan. 14 Mon Dark and horrid. Lura & Mrs. B. came over tonight & played flinch &c. Later I read "The Woman in the Alcove" - till rather late. Jan 15. Tues. Snow. A big Earthquake in Kingston Jamaica yesterday - tho' we didn't hear many details till the last of the week, Flack had intended going there - for his health - but now favors Cuba instead - we've been planning it. Have a new bookkeeper - boy Harper by name. Big meeting of stock- holders of the Peoples Dept. Store all afternoon, Cavanagh has appropriated $75,000 or more of their money - tho' I think they don't know it yet (I happen to, however, confidentially) The view of these things from the "inside" is "quite different".
