Dined at night in the dining car and spent some time in the vestibule, watching scenery. Arrived after 8 at Jersey City and the ride across the ferry was beautiful hazy & lights flickering & boats looming. Went to the Martha Washington

and got very good rooms - tho' a trifle too far apart - at $1.00 June. 17 Sat. Fine day. tho' rather hot. Dined at "Martha's"
cafe
and strolled up 5th ave. stopping for a brief call on Harry Wilkinson at the 520 5th ave. Bldg. Very fine. Went uptown, to Macy's &c. looking for a hat for Mother, but didn't find one. Took the L down to Rector St. and found the city much changed in 6 (?) years. Went to Mr. Gardenhire's
office and while waiting for him Miss Garfield came in. Had a little talk with him & found him very pleasant. He is going to "advise" &c. & Miss Garfield is to be executor.
They hope to sell stock enough to pay the debts (& reimburse him?) I don't want to be "it". I went over and called on Herbert
in a printing office in the Downing Bldg. He seemed very glad to see us. Talked him 'round in consulting Mr. G.
&c. about selling house. He's coming over to see us - went thro' the Trinity Bldg. to our Thames St. office, and foned Mr. Emmit
& Mr. Schenck
, who welcomed us most cordially. Showed us the shop, Hall of Records boxes "Town Lahey" &c. J.W.C. was coming in, but we didn't wait
