hadn't succeeded in getting in the parlor car as we intended. I enjoyed the ride very much - the visit with Claude, lunch - stroll at Syracuse (to get a glass of milk) and reading "The Garden of Allah" &c. The foliage, especially the Mohawk Valley - was very beautiful - but it was very cloudy and threatening by then - smoky, too. When we got to Saugerties - about 6:30 - it was pitch dark - I found Alice and steered her down for a minute's conversation with Claude - When the train left we piled into the closed carriage and drove home (after an errand in the village) thro' pitchy blackness - but with side lights lit. They were cordial and glad to see us - Nan, Aunt Mio and Alice. Found Cousin Carrie and Hariette

both sick abed! After supper (and there was Barbara - grown taller) we had a nice talk over the Waterford illegible

&c. and then went sleepy to bed Oct 19. Wed. A warm lovely morning but rather cloudy. The river calm and misty and lovely. "Raley" the dog, and the cat "Flora Marie" had a scrimmage before breakfast. After it I went up
