It was Maxine Elliott's third night in her new play by Clyde Fitch and I never saw her so beautiful. She was an American heiress loved by - and loving - a German Crown Prince, a dear boy with an adorable broken English tongue. There is a plot of the bad step mother. The interference of an adorable German Archduchess - the aunt - who "has lof-ed" herself- and all the complications of emotions over an suggested morganatic marriage and finally he gladly gives up his crown to a younger brother - with the King's reluctant consent. It was most delightful. Mr. Perry sat near us again (He did Wednesday.) Late again. Sept. 3. Sun. A lovely day - but it did rain hard in the night, Mother says - I was most monstrously sleepy even at getting - up time this morn- ing. After breakfast Zenda and I retired to my divan and and at last I began my treat "The Divine Fire", which I read more or less all day. This afternoon (after some picture-taking) in South Park, under a big chestnut - with the band music floating across the meadows - "The Holy City" - a cornet solo - and other very charming music. There were autos whizzing and golfers golfing - but I was alone with the mosquitoes - and even forgot them with Lucia and Keith on "On Harcombe Hill"
