Papa put me on the car (with steamer rugs &c.) and on the Summerville car I sat next to Bicknell and we had quite an old fashioned visit all the way down. He told me all the news of the "[illegible]" &c. It was quite like old times! The Flacks, their mother and "Eva

" got on that car but when we got there the wind was strong and the boat not in sight. It didn't get in till sometime after dark and was about 3/4 of an hour late in starting. Our stateroom - No.17 - was very nice. We were all settled and on deck when we "pulled out" It must have been just nine for the fireworks were just beginning. The wind was directly "aft" and the forward deck very comfortable. It was very dark till the moon rose, but sweet & fine. Some men sang and a few drops of rain fell and it was hard to go to bed we like it so. Neither Carol nor I slept much. I had the upper berth and the girls the lower. I dozed all night. At Belleville I found it was pouring rain (about 3:20 a.m.)
